Earthquake in Tibet – New update
According to the Consulate General in Lhasa, there are approximately 5,000 Nepalis in Tibet. Around 100 Nepali businesspeople are also present in Dingri village, the epicenter of the earthquake, and its surrounding areas. Nepalis are also residing in Tibet, but officials have stated there is no report of casualties among them. According to the Consulate General in Lhasa, all the Nepalis in Tibet, including those near Dingri village and its surroundings, are safe. Nepali Consul General Laxmi Prasad Niraula told BBC Nepali, “As soon as the earthquake struck, we contacted our Nepali community and local authorities. Everyone is safe. No harm has occurred.” He further mentioned that Lhasa, where the Nepali Consulate General is located, was not affected by the earthquake. The earthquake caused more than 1,000 houses to collapse in Shigatse alone. Electricity and water supply in the affected areas were also disrupted.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has directed full mobilization for search, rescue, and relief distribution and to ensure effective service delivery. Xi stated, “It is necessary to strengthen earthquake monitoring and early warning systems, immediately dispatch emergency rescue materials, swiftly repair damaged infrastructure, fulfill the basic needs of the affected people, and ensure safe shelter and warm clothing for everyone.”
