Pokhara – The Tourist Capital City of Nepal

Pokhara’s tranquil beauty has been a source of inspiration for many travel writers. Its pristine air, spectacular backdrop of snowy peaks, blue lakes, and surrounding greenery make it ‘the jewel in the Himalayas,’ a place of remarkable natural beauty. With the magnificent Annapurna range forming the backdrop and the serenity of the cluster of nine lakes, including three major ones—Phewa, Rupa, and Begnas—Pokhara is an excellent destination for a weekend getaway or a long, relaxing holiday. Pokhara Valley, the gateway to the Annapurna region where many trekkers find their Shangri-La, sits high on the list of ‘must-visit’ places in Nepal. Once an important trade route between India and Tibet, Pokhara still hosts mule trains on its outskirts, bringing goods from remote Himalayan regions, including Mustang. Gurungs and Magars, famed as fierce Gurkha warriors, are predominant here, while Thakalis, indigenous to the Thak Khola region of Mustang, are known for their entrepreneurship and operate tea houses along Annapurna’s trekking routes. Pokhara is best known for its stunning view of the Annapurna range and is perhaps one of the few places on Earth where mountains above 6,000 m can be seen unobstructed from an altitude of 800 m within a distance of 28 km.
